Denton is the county seat of Denton County, TX in the United States. In 2008 the city's population was estimated to be about 119,454, making it the eleventh largest city in the DFW Metroplex. The city is located about 40 miles south of the Oklahoma-Texas border and 40 miles northwest of Dallas. Denton TX is very much a college town. It is home to two state universities, The University of North Texas (the largest university in North Texas) and the Texas Women's University (a historically single-sex college completely co-ed since 1994). Altogether more than 45,000 students participate in courses at both of the universities.

History

A Texas land grant led to the formation of Denton County in 1846 and the city in 1857. Both the city and county were named after John Denton, who was a pioneer and Texas militia captain. The establishment of the two universities immediatley distinguished the city from neighboring regions. As a result, education and retail trade, play very large roles in Denton's economics. The town is known for it's growing music scene.
